This scholarship is presented in the memory of a highly respected member of the Chelmsford High Faculty and Football Coach, Joseph P. Nolan.

Mr. Nolan was a member of the Chelmsford High School Faculty for twenty years (1948 through 1968) teaching social studies, mathematics and physical education as well as coaching football and baseball.

“Coach” Nolan is best remembered for his commitment to his students and players with whom he came in contact during his tenure at CHS. His teams were always respected and competitive. He preached teamwork and dedication to sports and education. It is in this spirit that the Joseph P. Nolan Scholarship is presented annually to a college bound senior who has demonstrated the values that were taught, coached and exemplified by Coach Nolan throughout his life, while at home, in the classroom, and on the athletic field.

Mr. Nolan graduated from Lowell High School in 1916 and received his Bachelor’s degree from Canisius College in 1925. Mr. Nolan also taught and coached in Buffalo, NY and Lowell prior to coming to Chelmsford. His 1957 football team is remembered as one of the best all-time teams in this area, winning the State Class D Championship as well as the Lowell Suburban Conference Championship.

Coach Nolan was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame (1969), the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame (1976) and the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame (1991 - posthumously).
