Awarding Criteria: Will be awarded to a male and a female varsity senior swimmer who has exemplified character, leadership and scholarship
This scholarship is presented in recognition of a highly respected member of the Chelmsford High School Faculty and former Swim Coach, W. Allen Thomas.
Mr. Thomas has been a member of the Chelmsford High School Faculty for over thirty years serving in many capacities; teaching Social Studies, serving as History Department Head, Dean of Hawthorne House, and as Principal of Chelmsford High School. He also is responsible for the creation of both the Girls (1978) and Boys (1979) Swimming and Diving teams. These teams under his direction have been some of the most successful athletic programs in the history of Chelmsford High School.
Coach Thomas was synonymous with Chelmsford High School and the sport of swimming in Massachusetts from 1978-1994. He is best remembered for the deep impact he made on the lives of his athletes. His quiet, unassuming presence was a source of great strength to his athletes. Coach Thomas instilled the qualities of sportsmanship, commitment to excellence, hard work, and perseverance in all his athletes. His influence reached beyond his expertise in coaching both swimming and diving, but rather in the genuine care, sensitivity, and affection he demonstrated towards his athletes. Swimmers leaving Chelmsford High School were better people because of their time on the team with Coach Thomas. His influence left an indelible mark on their lives.
Mr. Thomas graduated from Middleboro High School in 1963, received his Bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1967, his Master’s degree from Tufts University in 1968, and his C.A.G.S from Boston University. In his career he coached All Americans, State Champions, Academic All Americans, and numerous MVC championship teams. Coach Thomas has been inducted into the Massachusetts High School Swim Coaches Hall of Fame.
This scholarship is awarded to the boy and girl swimmer who best exemplifies the qualities that Coach Thomas demonstrated and taught throughout his career.
