Dr. HENRY C. ZABIEREK
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established 2014

Awarding Criteria:  Will be awarded to a senior who has excelled in the study of United States History 

Henry Zabierek graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1942. He was active in class leadership, a board member of the Athletic Association, a member of the Yearbook staff, and he participated in the Senior Show and Stunt Night.

An honor student all four years, Mr. Zabierek was also a gifted athlete, playing varsity football and varsity baseball for two years and varsity basketball for four years. Basketball was his best sport. He was the league’s leading scorer and an All-Star all four years. Henry was the captain of the team his senior year, which was Merrimack Valley League Champion, with a 14 and 2 record. The overall record of the basketball team his four years was 55 and 6. They played in three straight conference championships and three straight Tech Tourneys.

He attended the University of Rhode Island after high school graduation. However, World War II interrupted his college career. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and is a veteran of the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns, as well as the occupation of Japan. He returned to URI after the war, and graduated with a B.A. in History in 1950. He was the sports editor of the campus newspaper and the secretary of his fraternity. Dr. Zabierek received a Master’s degree in 1961 and a Doctor of Arts in History Curriculum in 1971.

Henry began his career in education as a Social Studies teacher in Townsend, MA, Honolulu, and Sudbury, MA. In 1970, Henry moved into educational administration as the Director of Social Studies in Brookline, MA. He served as Assistant Superintendent in the Duxbury public schools, and retired from the Westford Public schools, as Assistant Superintendent, in 1990. He was also a visiting professor at Boston University and Framingham State College. In the course of his career in education, he published many articles and consulted with many other school systems, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. In recognition of his distinguished educational career, Dr. Zabierek was inducted into the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame in 1993.

Henry continued to be involved with the Alumni Association in retirement as the Editor of the Lion\'s Pride newsletter of the CHSAA for many years and as a member of the Association’s Board of Directors.
