Henrick R. Johnson, Jr.

Class of 1966

Henrick R. (Rowie) Johnson, Jr. was born, raised, and continues to live in Chelmsford. He is a successful businessman. A dedicated family person. Strong and admiral traits to be sure. However, his outstanding and extraordinary dedication to his hometown and area community maked him a more than qualified candidate for induction into the CHSAA Hall of Fame.

Rowie held elective office in Chelmsford for 23 consecutive years! As a member of the Chelmsford Planning Board and Chelmsford Board of Selectmen, he was an effective member of each board and very effective leader when it was his time to step-up as Chairperson.

He was Chairperson of the Planning board for 5 consecutive years. During these leadership years, Chelmsford was adding over 5 million square feet of industrial and office space. Rowie’s leadership guided this growth in a logical and controlled manner, which resulted in a strong tax base that created a strong fiscal base for Chelmsford. The result of this effort, leadership and forethought of planning resulted in the complex of businesses along Route 129. Over the years this area has greatly contributed to the tax base of the Town and helped ot moderate our tax base.

Rowie’s strong leadership continued when he moved on to the Board of Selectmen. He was an instrumental and strong voice in opposition to a Trash-to-Energy plant that had been proposed for the Lowell landfill near Drum Hill. This initiative was not in the best interest of Chelmsford, specifically the Westlands and North sections of town. An estimated 700 trash truck trips though these areas would have severely affected property values. Rowie, as a member of the Board of Selectmen and concerned resident of Chelmsford, was a vocal and effective leader in defeating this project.

In 1989, while Rowie was the Chairperson of the Board of Selectmen, the town was developing and constructing the Chelmsford Senior Center. As Chairperson, he attended numerous planning and informational meetings to guide this project to a successful conclusion.

Rowie also served on the Vesper Country Club’s Executive Committee (2004-2010). While he was the President of the Committee, Vesper underwent a complete renovation of the golf course. This was a major project for the Club. Rowie provided the leadership and dedication necessary to see the project to a successful conclusion. In fact, in 2010 Vesper was named as one of the top 100 Classic Courses in the Country.
