Laurie Carson Shufrin

Class of 1990

Laurie was one of the most accomplished student athletes ever to graduate from CHS.

Track & Field: In her Junior year she beat all MVC competitors in six events: 300m low hurdles, 100m high hurdles, 200m sprint, 400m sprint, triple jump and long jump. She set CHS records in two of these: 300m low hurdles and triple jump.

She continued domination in this sport her Senior year by breaking her own CHS records in four events: 300m low hurdles, 400m sprint, triple jump and long jump, and she also set a CHS record in 4x400m relay. She was state 300m hurdles champion and second in the state in long jump. Although she only ran 400m hurdles twice, she ran the second fastest time in the country in that event.

Laurie was named MVP both her Junior and Senior years.

Her track coach Jack Lang commented in a Boston Globe article, “When you consider her versatility, I’d have to say she’s the best all-around athlete I’ve ever coached. Most track athletes are specialists in one or two events, but we didn’t use Laurie that way. She went where she was needed. If we needed a sprinter, she ran the 100. If we needed her in the long jump, she did that. And she didn't get beat in a dual meet this year.”

Basketball: Laurie was a four-year varsity starter. In a Boston Globe article, her basketball coach Al Richards said, “She’s probably the best all-around athlete I’ve seen in my 17 years of coaching. She’s just so intense. She refuses to lose. She works so hard on becoming the best she can possibly be in anything she tries. She’s not satisfied with being average or even good. She has to be great.”

Volleyball: Laurie was a two-year varsity starter. With a 25” vertical jump she averaged 85% service points and blocks, and 83% hitting. Her Junior team went 16-2 and her Senior team went 20-0. Both teams were MVC champions. Her Junior team was a finalist in the Eastern Mass. Tournament, and her Senior Team was a semi-finalist.

Academics

Laurie was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She graduated 21st in a class of 450.

Laurie attended College of the Holy Cross graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics/Accounting in May 1994.

While there she played Division I Women’s Basketball for all four years (1990– 94) and was Team Captain her Senior year. She received numerous awards including Most Valuable Player of the Patriot League (1994), Patriot League All-Tournament Team (1994), and Patriot League Player of the Week (January 9, 1994). Her teams went 78-40 over her four years. They were Patriot League champions two years, Patriot League runner up one year, Patriot League semi-finalist one year, and went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament one year.

Laurie set many school records which still stand to this day.

Upon graduation from Holy Cross Laurie worked as a Staff Accountant for TLP Leasing Corporation in Boston. After a little over a year she took a position as Senior Associate for Arthur Andersen LLP in Boston. While there she obtained her CPA. Later she joined one of her clients, Aspen Technology Inc. in Cambridge, as a Corporate Finance Manager. Transferring to Chicago she worked at BP plc as a Senior Financial Analyst. Returning to the Boston area she worked as a Corporate Finance Manager for StrideRite Corp. in Lexington until she became a full-time mother just before her second child was born.

Laurie has been active in the Littleton school community.
