Charles cosiders himself first and foremost a farmer, and has worked on farms since he was very young. After CHS, Charlie was in the US Navy from 1969 to 1973, at one time serving on a nuclear submarine at Pearl Harbor, HI. Upon returning from the service, he continued farming as well as home construction, incorporating non-traditional materials, design and landscape features. He has donated time, talent, and use of his equipment to many organizations in town: The Paul Center, Chelmsford Historical Society, Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust, Scout troops, Friends of Southwell Park, and Conservation Commission properties at Walter Lewis Community Gardens and Redwing Farm. Charlie was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2009 in the 4th of July Parade. He has served on the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Agricultural Commission, using business expertise to help others through various municipally-mandated processes.
