Brian Popolizio

Class of 1964

A standout three-sport athlete at Chelmsford High School, Brian Popolizio excelled on the football field, basketball court, and track. His accomplishments are numerous and well documented. In his senior year alone, Brian was a starting running back on the first undefeated varsity football team (MVP, All-League, and All-State), a member of the basketball team that went to the state finals at the “Boston Garden”, and finished 3rd in the State Class 220 track meet.  As a former teammate noted, “Brian was a highly driven athlete with a strong competitive spirit, which resulted in success at every sport he played. More important than the athletic success, Brian was a well-grounded individual with a strong foundation of values including personal responsibility, reliability, and loyalty.” Another teammate states “Whatever his mission, Brian leaves nothing to chance, no stone unturned. He is truly remarkable!” Brian also finished his senior year as President of the Chelmsford High School Student Council.

Brian continued his desire to compete at the collegiate level at Springfield College, but a football injury ended that goal. He eventually transferred to Salem State and played three years on the Salem State Basketball Team, starting as point guard during his senior season.

Brian was an outstanding educator, football and basketball coach at Littleton High School from 1970-1985. His athletic director commented that Brian took “students and athletes into special care.” Brian’s teams were disciplined and well prepared for every game. He conducted himself as a role model within the classroom and on the playing fields. An opposing coach noted that “Brian approached coaching with enthusiasm and excitement; he loved to teach fundamentals, sportsmanship, and the team concept. Brian’s players not only respected Brian as their coach, but also as an educator.” He turned out first-class athletes and first-class citizens. Brian was recently inducted into the Littleton High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his success as a football and basketball coach, a well-deserved recognition.

After teaching at Littleton, Brian became a well-known salesman of sporting equipment and supplies in the region. He interacted with many athletic directors, coaches, and student-athletes over the years, treating each with the integrity that defines Brian’s character. However, he was much more than “just a sales representative”; he would spend countless hours with players and coaches, always listening to their concerns. Brian would then follow each team with interest as if he was still its coach.

Over the past 15 years Brian has been active at the Westford Methodist Church in several capacities, notably as a member of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, an Usher and a Liturgist, while helping deliver food supplies each month to the Lowell Food Pantry.

As a student-athlete, educator, coach, successful businessman, and church volunteer, Brian Popolizio has been a positive role model for countless students, athletes, and coaches in our region and beyond. He has had a positive impact on countless students, athletes, and coaches in his caring and dedicated style.

Brian, welcome to the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
