Dr. Michael G. Sargent, DDS

Class of 1975

“….The Hall of Fame inductees may be outstanding scholars, leaders…. They may have achieved great success in their chosen careers and/or make notable contributions to their communities.”

A review of Mike’s resume and information reveals a history of hard work,

perseverance and dedication that has resulted in his being a highly respected dentist, community member, and quiet philanthropist.

Following his 1975 graduation from CHS, Mike graduated from St. Anselm College in 1979 Summa Cum Laud with a BA in Biology.  He was inducted into Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic Honor Society, the small Catholic college’s version of Phi Beta Kappa.

Mike graduated with honors from Georgetown School of Dentistry in 1983, having been elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) National Honorary Dental Society.

His quiet philanthropy also began while at Georgetown.  He participated in a summer break dental/medical program in Latin America, Georgetown Organization for Latin American Countries (GOLAC).  He describes this summer in the Dominican Republic as “The best and worst experiences of my life”.  He gained valuable dental experience as well as observing the poverty and human suffering in the area.  This experience would provide the basis for his future civic and philanthropic endeavors.

Dr. Sargent has combined his professional life with his civic involvement by restoring the Eriksen property on Chelmsford Street.  This resulted in a modern state of the art home for his practice and being awarded the 2001 “Town of Chelmsford Guardian Award” for preserving a piece of Chelmsford history.

His civic involvement includes his many historically significant property restorations, and supporting local charities with active participation and fiscal support.  One of his most visible roles was being Santa for 25 years for the Annual Tree Lighting on the Common and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization.

The following narrative is, but one example, of Dr. Sargent’s “quiet philanthropy”:

Mike runs before his day starts.  Over time during these daily morning runs, he began to notice a car parked in front of the Laundromat on Chelmsford St.  The car was always parked in the same place with a young woman reclined in the front seat.  As the weather got cooler Mike saw that the woman was clearing condensation off of the windshield so she could watch the Laundromat TV.  It got cold enough so she had to scrape the windshield.  At this point Mike approached the car and spoke to the occupant.  He asked, “If you had a place where you could stay for the winter with heat and electricity rent free, would you like to do it”?  She asked, “Is there such a place”? Mike gave her the address and name of his contractor and told her to see him, never telling her that he owned the building.  “Betty” stayed in the apartment for 6 rent-free months.  This was just the opportunity she needed to work a small part-time job and find some low-income housing.
